Grandma D's Mystery Bars
Josh Long
During the month of December I am always reminded of some of my favorite memories (mostly thanks to Facebook). If Facebook were around when I was younger, I am most certain that each year I would get an alert in my memories tab reminding me of the Christmas goodie box that Grandma Darlene would send us each year. Among the many wonderful items inside this box were a delicious treat called Mystery Bars. This recipe was inspired by Grandma and is forever imbedded in my memory for the joy it brought me as a child, and they're just damn good!
- 40 saltine crackers
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 package chocolate chips (11 oz)
- 1 cup chopped walnuts or almonds
Preheat oven to 375° F
Grease a 15x10x1 inch baking sheet or close to it. Line with the saltine crackers. Set aside.
In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, melt butter. Add in sugar and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Once it begins to boil, remove from heat.
Pour over the cracker. Place in to the oven for about 10 minutes, or until the crackers get browned and caramelized.
Sprinkle with chocolate chips and allow it to sit for several minutes (until they melt). Spread with a spatula evenly over crackers and immediately sprinkle with the nuts or crushed candy.
Allow chocolate to set and then store in airtight container.
